WORLD WAR 2
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO BE AN EVACUEE?
During the war the children who lived in London, had Anderson shelters installed, they had to practice air raids a lot. Their schooling time had been cut down to one or even half an hour a day, most of the time they’d spend most of their time in bomb shelters.
Then the ‘powers’ decided that the children should be evacuated to the safe country. All the children where taken to Paddington station.
Some of the children were only 5 or younger, but they still had to be evacuated. Most of the children got to go to nice foster parents.
The country was a new place for the city children, most of them were amazed by the new animals that the country people would see every day. In the book Goodnight Mister Tom, which is based on a true story, is another example of a good foster home.
WHAT WAS THE DIET OF PEOPLE LIKE DURING THE WAR?
In World War 2 Britain had food delivered from different countries by ship.
But the German soldiers sunk the ships that were carrying supplies for Britain. After that the country had 2 survive on their own, so they decided to ration everything. Children under five were allowed half the normal meat ration and children between five and sixteen who held blue ration books were allowed fruit, a full meat ration and half a pint of milk per day. Everyone was allowed 16 points per month to use on whatever food item they wanted. This was later increased to 20 points per month. The items still had to be paid for of course. In addition they also had a daily pint of milk and a double supply of eggs as well as Cod Liver Oil and Orange juice; although egg rationing varied from between one every two weeks during the winter to 3 or 4 during the spring or summer months.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE DURING THE BLITZ IN 1940?
The Blitz started during the afternoon of September 7, 1940 in Hitler’s attempt to subdue Great Britain. At around 4:00pm on that September day, 348 German bombers escorted by 617 fighters blasted London until 6:00pm. Two hours later, guided by the fires that set the assault, a second group of raiders commenced and another attack that lasted until 4:00 the following morning. For the next consecutive 57 days, London was bombed either during the day or night. Fires consumed many parts of the city. Many people stayed in the Underground stations that sheltered as many as 177,000 people during the night. The Blitz ended on May 11, 1941 when Hitler called off the air raids in order to move his bombers east for Germany’s invasion on Russia. Living in those times I think would be terrifying. Everywhere you stepped you would have watch out for bomb. And even if you escaped the bombing there was still the fire’s to look out for. You would be afraid to leave house because of bombings, but your house could still get bombed.
